Twit or Tweet
Sport stars and managers have always been getting into trouble for what they have said to the press. I remember clearly remember watching Kevin Keegan losing it in an interview when asked a question about Alex Ferguson. His outburst of "I'd love it if we beat them! Love it!" was one of many times that the heat of the moment has got the better of an individual who is generally a good professional. Back in the day only a few people got interviewed so you only heard the odd outburst but nowadays there are more methods of communicating with the press and the public. The one with the highest usu age at the moment is twitter and it has caused quite a few controversies.
Recently, cricketers Kevin Pietersen and Dimitri Mascarenhas were both fined for rants on Twitter.
Footballers Jozy Altidore and Darren Bent have also been in trouble for ill-advised public comments, while swimmer Stephanie Rice lost a sponsorship deal and was forced to make a public apology for an allegedly homophobic comment on Twitter.
Following all of this the Europe and United States Ryder Cup teams have been banned from tweeting until after the end of the tournament. Both US captain Corey Pavin and his counterpart Colin Montgomerie, who said tweeting could cause "trouble", confirmed their decision on this Monday. Is this really necessary, there haven't been many outbreaks from golf players in the past and most of them happen on the course not afterwards.
They seem to be making sure that nothing will effect the way their sides play during the Ryder Cup but I just think this is the sort of statement that stays inside the camp. The whole world doesn't need to know that they shouldn't tweet about what is going on or how they are feeling. Making this sort of public statement to me says that they don't believe that they could keep them from doing it if it wasn't announced publicly.
I think it is a bit daft to do this but I can see the logic, they want the golf to be what people are talking about not a twitter outburst.
