NFL Week Three Review
Another smashing weekend display of American football in the NFL this weekend. This week of football saw again just one game go to overtime with a thrilling overtime quarter between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons. A thrilling encounter between Buffalo and New England as they both score over 30 points. The two sides with the most history meet on Monday Night Football. The Chicago Bears have the Most Wins, Most Hall of Famers and the Second Most Championships played the Green Bay Packers who have the Second Most Wins, Second Most Hall of Famers and the Most Championships. And after this round of games only the Steelers and the Chiefs in the AFC and the Bears in the NFC have 3-0 records.
This weekend I managed to catch two games on Sunday and the Monday Night Football Game.
This game saw a quite a few shocks. Amazingly Drew Brees who hadn’t thrown a interception in his previous 241 plays threw 2 in his first 8 plays of this match. But he recovered from that to throw 365 yards from 30/38 passed including 3 touchdowns, with his main receiver being Lance Moore who ran 149 yards in 6 receptions including 2 touchdowns. The Falcons looked liked they might have won this match in normal time but good final drive by the Saints gave Garrett Hartley a 32 yard field goal attempt which he put in-between the post with 9 seconds left on the clock. And in overtime the Saints appeared to have completed a brilliant comeback when Drew Brees drove New Orleans deep into Falcons territory to set up a 29-yard field goal in overtime. Instead, Hartley hooked the kick to the left for his third miss this season. Matt Bryant did what Garrett Hartley could not, drilling a 46-yard field goal with 1:55 left in overtime to hand a 27-24 overtime win to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts both played exciting offensive throughout this match but it was the red zone defence of the Colts that won them this match. Kyle Orton threw for a career-best 476 yards on 37/57 passing compare to Peyton Manning’s 325 yards from 27/45 and the Broncos outgained the Colts by more than 100 yards. But they failed to get into the end zone on five trips inside the 20-yard line, settling for two field goals and turning over the ball after failing on 4th & short on three separate occasions, this meant that Orton only threw 1 TD to Manning’s 3. The Colts has a few key injuries so the Broncos stood a real chance but with Garcon nursing a sore hamstring, Austin Collie set career bests with a dozen catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns, and Blair White, playing because Gonzalez has a high ankle sprain, caught a touchdown pass one day after being promoted from the practice squad.
The Packers offense and defence were better in general throughout this game but their lack of discipline and the poor performance of the special teams cost the Packers the game. In the first two games of the season the Packers gave up 8 penalties, in this match they gave up 18 penalties for 152 yards, it was the most penalties in NFL history of the Packers. Bears’ punt return Hester picked up over 100 yards with a 62 yard TD return and on another return he picked up 40 yards and the Bears scored on that drive. Green Bay’s quarterback Rodgers and Chicago’s quarterback Cutler both threw well and rushed well during this game. Rodgers threw over 300 yards including 1 TD and 1 INT he also scored a rushing TD, his counterpart Cutler threw over 300 yards including 1 TD and 1 INT but also rushed for 3 first downs. But it was the 37 yard field goal attempt by Green Bay blocked by Peppers in third quarter that was probably the decisive moment of this match. The Chicago Bears are the only 3-0 team left in the NFC.
