Plenty to see in India

There is plenty of sport to see in India at the moment the Commonwealth games got under way yesterday with the first gold going to a 17 year old Nigerian weight lifter.  But away from Delhi there was also a another sport trying to steal the limelight.  In Mohali, there was an absolutely thrilling game of cricket being played.  It came down to the 5th day of play with India requiring 216 to win on a pitch which was turning into a batters nightmare after it was kept perfectly by the ground staff so it just faded away on the final days of play.  VVS Laxman struck a superb unbeaten 73 as India fought back from the brink of defeat to beat Australia by one wicket in this thrilling first Test.

The XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi started in the early hours of Monday morning BST after a wonderful opening ceremony on Sunday.  The opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main stadium of the event, although there have been many article about how the venues and the athletics village are not ready the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is not one of those venues.  The Stadium looks magnificent and during the opening ceremony it did look like at least the athletics will happen without a hitch this games.

Teenage Nigerian weightlifter Augustina Nkem Nwaokolo has won the first gold medal of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi in the women's 48kg division.  But by the end of the first day the Australians lead the medal table a position they will hols for the rest of the Commonwealth Games.  This morning England picked up their first gold medals in the swimming pool with Fran Hasall and Liam Tancock winning the 50m butterfly and backstroke respectively.

In in Mohali the Australian lost after scoring more than 425 runs in the first innings against India, in India for a second time, they are the only side to do this.  It didn't look like it was going to happen when Australia reduced India to 124-8 but Laxman, batting with a runner due to a back injury, was ably assisted by tail-ender Ishant Sharma as India rallied . But when Sharma was dismissed for 31 the hosts still required 11 to win.  In a dramatic finale, Laxman and last man Pragyan Ojha held their nerve to see India to the victory target of 216.

The Commonwealth Games continues until the 14th October with lots of coverage on the BBC if you live in the UK and plenty of coverage by other service providers in other countries.
