Well it firstly this is a couple of days late but i didn't get round to watching the highlights of most a week one till yesterday. It has been an interest week of tennis starting with Novak Djokovic nearly losing to a fellow Serb who is over a 100 places worse in the world rankings and ending with the utter capitulation of Andy Murray's form. And that was just the men's draw there was lots of going on in the women's side as well.
After the surprise of the Roland Garros the women's draw has some normality to it with 6 of the last 8 being in the top 8 seeding spots. Some might say that that is boring but there were some top matches along the way, the return to form of Maria Sharapova dealing out a double bagel to USA player Beatrice Capra in the third round only to then lose 6-3 6-4 to World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki who has yet to win a grand slam but looks good to go one further than last year and win the US open this year, maybe this time she can even get some revenge against.
The return to success of Francesca Schiavone after the hiccup at SW19 is also a great thing to see she has played well throughout this tournament and is one of only a few of the top players who hasn't looked flustered by the wind at Flushing Meadows, but I think she will have meet her match when she plays Venus Williams in the Quarters, the USA star has now reached the quarters for the 10th time, fourth highest in Open Era behind Navratilova (14), Graf (12), Evert (11). Venus will be too much for Francesca and should go through to face most likely Kim Clistsers.
In the men's draw most will be talking about Andy Murray failing once again to perform to his maximum level at a Grand Slam, but to me this isn't unexpected, he fails to perform almost every time in Grand Slams. In my opinion his training seems to make him peak and the wrong moments, a player should be slowly getting to the top of their game at the start of the second week of a Grand Slam but Andy never seems to do this, Rafa and Roger have go this art down but Andy just can't pull it off. He always peaks either in the first week of a tournament or the weeks coming up to the tournament. Murray also missed out on a possible the easist draw to the semi's, only having to bet Wawrinka, Querrey and one of Youzhny or Robredo all players that Murray has wining records against.
Elsewhere in the men's draw there have been some par performances from Nadal and Federer who have made it though without wasting energy or magic, with obvious exception of Roger pulling off another winner through the legs against Dabul. The quarter final of choice has to be Soderling versus Federer, a match up which has shown us the wonders of tennis and hopefully will again.
Well week one is down and week two is already upon us, I honestly believe this could be a victory for both 1st seeds Nadal and Wozniacki which would be the first time that has happened at the US Open since 2007 when Federer and Henin won. All I as a fan can hope for is more of the excitement and hopefully less of the weather.
