David Beckham Returns But Why?

David Beckham made his first competitive appearance in six months as Los Angeles Galaxy beat Columbus Crew 3-1 at the Home Depot Center.  Beckham had not played since rupturing his Achilles playing on loan for AC Milan in March, which ruled him out of the World Cup, but came on as a replacement after 70 minutes of Galaxy's Major League Soccer clash.

With LA three goals to the good Beckham was introduced, it was a low-key cameo but he did find time to earn a booking four minutes after his introduction.  Beckham came on wide on the right and was quickly in the game, linking up well with Landon Donovan, seeing a shot charged down two minutes after his arrival and indulging in some heated conversations with the referee's assistant.

With Los Angeles Galaxy top of the West Conference and having the best record of all the sides MLS and have been doing perectly well without David Beckham.  The question that is on my lips is

Is there any reason for David Beckham to continue playing?

Now Beckham is 'fit' again he has indicated he would still like to play for England. He has put himself in the frame for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley on October 12 saying
"I'd like to be available to play for England. If I'm fit then I'm sure the (England) manager will consider me,'' in an interview with Sky Sports News.
But the problem for me is that David Beckham is a right midfielder come centre mid which are Englands two strongest positions with Adam Johnson, Theo Walcott and Shuan Wright-Phillips all fighting hard for that right winger role and Gerrard and Barry looking good in the middle.  David Beckham might get in the 23-man squad but he isn't in the first team and he probably isn't second choice in any position.  If he comes onto the pitch it will be a cameo send-off to end his career, as the huge and class star that David Beckham was does he really want to end his career like this.  David Beckham should have retired after the injury moved onto the world of coaching.

  1. Ok, whilst I agree that beckham shouldn't play for England again, as he's too old, and there are much better options, I can't help but admire him because of his determination to keep playing at the top level as long as he can. Lest we forget the likes of Maldini et al
