How much more do you pay to go English?

There have been plenty articles over the last two days talking about the prospect of Manchester United buying Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, the reports range in the value of the transfer for the 20 year old English International (a substitute appearance to watch Zlatan) but most saying somewhere between £12 million and £15 million.  Like most people I knew he was a good prospect but it was his performances in the League Cup last year which brought him to my attention, he tore Manchester United apart in Palace's shock 2-1 win.  The question for me is, will United be paying over the top for Zaha because he English?
If United go though with this deal he will either equal or beat Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's record of £12 million for a player bought from an English Club not in the Premier League.  Also in there have only been three English players under the age of 21 which have sold for more that "The Ox", United bought Wayne Rooney for £32.5 million and Phil Jones for £17 million, and Arsenal bought for Francis Jeffers for £13.5 million.  So not many English players have gone for this amount money but in fact if you include foreigners only 22 players below the age of 21 have cost more than £10 million ranging from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ajren Robben to Jose Antonio Reyes and Hugo Viana.

Out of the top 40 most expensive Premier League signings only 10 of them are English, Rio Ferdinand (twice), Andy Carroll, Wayne Rooney, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Joleon Lescott, Michael Carrick, Michael Owen, Owen Hargreaves and Darren Bent.  Out of these nine I think only Rooney and Ferdinand have come close to being worth the money and United have been willing to splash the cash on young and on English players.  Four of the 10 most expensive English players where bought by United and Four of the 10 most expensive young players where bought by United, this could be because they have historically spent the most but I do believe Fergie has been willing to spend more on a youngster as he really buys players over 25.

If Zaha is bought for this amount then he will have a lot to live up to but if he fails he won't live in the anals of history as a expensive flop as there have been plenty worse before him and if United are willing to splash the cash a bit then he is even less likely to be a flop.  If you want more info about premier league signings I suggest you check this website out.
