Sunday Sport Round-Up

Plenty of sport kept me excited this busy weekend with important games going on in many sports.  Only one of the top five of the Premiership going into this weekend won, three of them lost.  Light shone down on Fernando as he was imperious at the Marina Bay.  The World Open sees four previous Cucible winners in the semi finals.  The only unbeaten team in Aviva and Barclays Premiership's lose but both leagues one team is still win.  But again the weekend has a tragedy as former Great Britain rugby league player Terry Newton has been found dead.

If you thought that the Premiership was getting boring, that the top sides will just buy their positions from the lower side and Chelsea were going to win it easily then you were wrong.  The early game on Saturday saw Man City outplay and defeat Chelsea, then the Sky Blues weekend got better with Arsenal and Tottenham losing to West Brom and Ham respectively.  Liverpool also drew then on Sunday it became probably the best weekend they could of wished for as their city rivals United only managed a draw against Bolton.  Elsewhere Villa picked up a win in Gerard Houllier's first league game in charge with Emile Heskey playing like he did when Houliier first bought him and Everton drew again this weekend leaving them the last side out of the 92 English league sides without a win.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso held off Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel from start to finish to win a hard-fought and eventful Singapore Grand Prix.  Alonso's win lifts Him to second in the drivers' championship, just 11 points behind Webber after Lewis Hamilton failed to finish after colliding with the Red Bull of Mark Webber.  While Webber was lapping a Virgin, Hamilton used the slipstream of the Red Bull to get past Webber on the outside then when it came to the corner Hamilton turned in and Webber did slow down and clattered into the side of Hamilton.  The collision put Hamilton out of the race and surprisingly no damage to Webber's car.  The stewards looked at it and viewed it as a racing incident and gave Webber no penalty but the cynic in me says he hit Hamilton knowing that he would have less damage taken to his car and maybe put Hamilton out.  Button finished fourth behind Webber leaving him in fifth in the standings 25 points behind Webber who is still first.

The inaugural snooker World Open in Glasgow reached it's climax this weekend.  It features a short version of the game than usual, it is best of five frame in every round apart from the final which is best of nine.  Many wonder if the top players would get through to the latter rounds in this format but Ronnie O'Sullivan said he thought the best plays will get to the top no matter how many frame they play, be it 1 or 35.  The Rocket was correct the four semi finalists were all world champions and with O'Sullivan beating Ebdon and Robertson just edging Williams this evenings final will take place between two of the more charismatic players.

This weekend the Rugby Union's Aviva Premiership saw a lot of tries.   Saracens ended Northampton's unbeaten record at a rain-soaked Vicarage Road, with fly-half Derick Hougaard the home side's goal-kicking hero.  Saracens won 24-17 with all of Saracens 24 points coming of Hougaard's boot.  Elsewhere Harlequins got their first win of the season with 40-13 bonus point win against the newly promoted Exter and Leeds Carnegie suffered a crushing 48-6 defeat to Leicester conceding 8 tries and leaving them bottom of the table with one point from four games.  Next week the match the weekend will be the repeat of the Grand Final last year between Saracens and Leicester.

And finally to end on a sad note again the former Great Britain rugby league player Terry Newton has been found dead at a house in Greater Manchester.  The 31-year-old is understood to have been found hanged at a house in Orrell, near Wigan, on Sunday afternoon.  Inquiries have been launched, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
