The Sunday Sport Round-Up

Another fantastic weekend of sport for our viewing.   A very entertaining derby will let Ferguson forget about Liverpool and look towards Man City and Chelsea, more controversy in cricket as coach and captain speak out, a Brit wins a sprinting jersey in the Vuelta, the Great North provides plenty of shocks and performances and snooker unleashes one of it new speed formats. But on a slightly more disappointing note another shooting in Delhi puts more doubts and questions about the Commonwealth Game.

So lets start with the world of football, after points dropped by Arsenal to a last kick of the game goal by Darren Bent. Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United and City look to take advantage of it this Sunday.  Man United showed the difference between them and Liverpool this season Dimitar Berbatov's rejuvenation continued as his brilliant hat-trick gave Manchester United a fully deserved win against Liverpool at Old Trafford.  And with Chelsea's brushing aside Blackpool to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points and City finally stepping up to the plate with Carlos Tevez guiding them to a comfortable win against Wigan at a rain-soaked DW Stadium , Liverpool's weekend has been a disappointing one.
England skipper Andrew Strauss insists the one-day international series against Pakistan should carry on despite calls for its abandonment.  This came just a day after England coach Andy Flower believes the one-day international series against Pakistan has been "devalued" by the continuing spot-fixing allegations. The series will continue despite claims of spot-fixing in Friday's one-dayer game at The Oval, following the ongoing probe into events in the fourth Test.  "From a selfish perspective, it's really annoying," said Flower where as Strauss said: "It's a hard thing to stop a series when we don't know how credible the evidence is. "

Mark Cavendish won the points jersey at the Tour of Spain to become the first Briton in 21 years to earn the sprinters' title at a Grand Tour.   The Manxman, 25, held on to the green jersey despite American rival Tyler Farrar winning the final stage.  Cavendish is only the second Briton to secure a sprint title in one of the top three stage races following Malcolm Elliott's 1989 triumph in Spain. Vincenzo Nibali was the first Italian in 20 years to win the overall title.

On Saturday the people of Gateshead saw some quality and some shocks.  England captain Andy Turner won the 110m hurdles at the Great North City Games to lead his team to a 5-4 victory against Australia.  There was also a surprise with Australia's Olympic champion Steve Hooker failing all three attempts at his opening 5.40m mark, bailing on one of his attempts and missing the mat hurting his knee.  On Sunday Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie powered to an emphatic victory in his first Great North Run in Gateshead the marathon world-record holder, 37, surged clear at halfway to win by a huge margin from Kenya's Kiplimo Kimutai in a time of 59:33.

The World Open of snooker has started one of its new competition formats, with over hundred people taking part and a 3 frame format it is this new quick snooker that Ronnie O'Sulliven and Barry Hearn have been taking about. Tonight legend Jimmy White takes part against Paul Davison.  This quick tempo version is an attempt to gain more fans but I think it is a bit of a joke.

Finally two foreign tourists have been injured after gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a bus in the Indian capital, Delhi, police say.  The incident took place near the Jama Masjid mosque, a popular tourist site. There have been concerns over security in the city, which is due to host the Commonwealth Games next month, but organisers said the shooting would have no impact on the event.
